A selection of lines is given; the full litany has around forty lines in the Ashkenazi rite, while in other rites the number and order vary.1
The Talmud attributes the core of the prayer to Rabbi Akiva, who prayed this way for rain during a drought and was answered.2
On Yom Kippur, especially at Neilah, “chotmenu” (seal us) is said instead of “kotvenu” (inscribe us). In many congregations the final line is sung together to a well-known melody.
Avinu Malkeinu is usually not said on Shabbat (an exception in some congregations is Neilah on a Yom Kippur that falls on Shabbat). In some traditions Sephardi congregations say it at other times during the Ten Days of Repentance, in a different way.3
